"They want fire? ... I'll show them fire!"

- Ferno

Ferno the Fire Dragon is the first Beast in the Beast Quest series. A large dragon Beast, Ferno is one of the Good Beasts of Avantia who helps defend the realm from harm. The Beast's main role is protecting southern Avantia and ensuring the population of the region are free from danger. The Fire Dragon lives in a cave in the mountain range near the Winding River, the main source of clean water for southern Avantians, with one of the main duties of Ferno being ensuring the river continues to flow to ensure the citizens have enough water to survive. The Winding River is also vital to the Fire Dragon, as it is his own source of water. He is said to start every day with drinking from the river in the early morning. Due to the Beast's size and colouration, he can be confused as part of the mountain and rock, camouflage he used to keep his existence secret when the Kingdom of Avantia denied the Beasts existed or to ambush foes. The Beast was targeted by Malvel and brought under the dark wizard's control due to a dark magic collar being fastened around his neck, and contributed to the corrupted Beast's attempt to bring Avantia to its knees so Malvel could take power. While incredibly strong and armed with an armament of sharp teeth and talons, the Beast's main weapon is scorching fire he produces within his body and expels from his mouth, hot enough to incinerate flesh and bone easily. Ferno was the first Beast to appear and fight in the series and the only Avantian Beast to be controlled by Maximus. Ferno has come to the aid of Avantia on many occasions, being a steadfast ally to Tom and Elenna. While called a dragon, as Ferno only has two legs, he is more accurately considered a wyvern, although some illustrations mistakenly show him with four legs. Ferno's name likely comes from inferno due to the Beast's affiliation with fire.

Protecting Avantia[]

Since his birth, Ferno's role was to protect southern Avantia. Due to the activity of evil forces within the south, he was forced to mature quickly so he was ready for battle whenever necessary. He performed admirably and helped keep the region safe. While he made attempts to keep his existence secret from the local population, rumours of his existence circulated around Avantia, as it did for all the Beasts.

Where It All Began[]

As one of the Six Good Beasts of Avantia, Ferno was one of the targets of Malvel's attack on Avantia. He located the Beast and attacked, managing to fasten a collar containing dark magic that bent the Beast to Malvel's will. The dark wizard ordered the Beast to begin causing havoc in his territory to help render Avantia easy to conquer. The Fire Dragon used his strength to push boulders into the Winding River, damming it and using his fire breath to evaporate the water enough to keep the water level too low to bypass the makeshift dam. He then set about burning down the crop fields of the local villages and towns, leaving much of Avantia struggling to make harvests substantial enough. One of the villages he targeted in this scorched earth operation was Errinel. The fires he created was the reason Tom was sent to the City, which would start him down his journey to become a Master of the Beasts.

It's a great day to make new acquaintances, my horoscope is never wrong

Ferno battling Caldor.

The Avantian knight Caldor the Brave was dispatched to free the six Beasts, being given a key created by Aduro designed specifically to open Ferno's collar. He travelled to southern Avantia and began to seek for the Beast with his page Edward. The Fire Dragon disguised himself and allowed the knight to begin climbing him, unaware he walking up the Fire Dragon. Caldor began to climb ahead of his page, being separated when Ferno began to rise up, shaking Edward free. As he rose to his full height Caldor maintained his grip, causing the Beast to try and take to the air, making Caldor order Edward to return to the City and inform King Hugo of his fate, as he expected to die against Ferno. Before Edward could respond, Ferno whipped out his tail, striking the page and sending him flying. As he rose higher, the Fire Dragon released a stream of flame, seemingly incinerating Caldor as a scorched gauntlet fell to the ground soon after. Out of desperation for their best warrior being killed, King Hugo and Aduro would accept Tom's offer to attempt to free the Beasts.

In their search for the Fire Dragon, Tom and Elenna would repeat Caldor's mistake and began climbing Ferno. As Tom examined what he perceived to be slate, he realised they were scales. As he and Elenna were hurrying off the Beast, Ferno sensed them and roared in anger and began to shift and rear up, with the Avantians throwing themselves clear. The Beast lowered his head towards them, examining his new foes, holding Tom's gaze before the inexperienced warrior broke eye contact and brandished his sword, causing Ferno to react and uncoil his tail, menacingly whipping it. Silver was the first to attack as the tail descended at his foes, biting into the scaly flesh of the tail's end. The Beast roared in anger, lifted his tail, and threw Silver off. Elenna rushed to her wolf, aggravating the Fire Dragon who roared out and pulled his head back to strike. He released a fireball, being met by Tom's shield, able to withstand the fire, likely because it was made of wood from the Tree of Being. The Beast hissed in frustration before withdrawing. Tom quickly smothered the fire lingering on the shield before pursuing on Storm. Hearing his foes approach, Ferno turned towards them and spread a wing wide to strike. Before he could whip it forward, Tom leapt from Storm, landing on the wing. The Beast thrust his head at Tom, but Tom grabbed onto his chin to move towards the collar, causing Ferno to writhe his head to dislodge his enemy. As the warrior drew closer to the lock, the Beast roared in anger and threw his head upwards, making Tom drop the key, but before the Fire Dragon could finish Tom, Elenna passed the key back by firing an arrow into his shield, with the key attached. As the Beast still writhed, Tom entered and turned the key, causing the collar to vanish and release Ferno. The freed Beast approached his foes, nodded in acknowledgement of their accomplishments, and took to the air. He dismantled the dam, returning fresh water to the people and making no more attempts to destroy crops.

When Vedra and Krimon hatched, Ferno travelled to the Nidrem Caves with the other Good Beasts to protect them. When Tom and Elenna arrived, he was resting below a small cliff. He joined the other Beasts at the cave mouth send the group off, offering transport to the young Beasts and Avantians, with Vedra and Elenna riding on his back. When the group stopped to help Seth, Ferno stayed out the fight with Epos, watching but not attacking. The Beast returned to the ground when Seth revealed his loyalty to Malvel by causing Epos to crash, taking Vedra away. Ferno and Epos didn't follow Tom and Elenna in trying to recover Vedra, instead Ferno used his wings to hide himself and Epos, simply appearing as a large rock.

When Vedra was purified and recovered, Ferno and Epos sensed it and flew to join the group. Ferno landed and allowed the two young dragons to climb onto his back, personally taking them to the mountains deeper in Rion to train.

The Golden Armour[]

Shenron

Ferno burning the canopy.

Ghidorah

Ferno flying away after Claw's defeat.

During battle with the Evil Beast Claw, the Giant Monkey used the canopy to keep himself mobile and safe. In order to try and give them a chance, Tom summoned Ferno to battle to burn away the canopy. The Fire Dragon hurried to the Dark Jungle roaring in greeting, scaring away many small creatures. The Beast began incinerating the canopy, giving Claw far less of an advantage and smoking him out, the Good Beast tailing the Evil Beast through the trees and bringing trees down to cut off escape routes, eventually forcing the Giant Monkey to drop to the jungle floor. As the Avantians fought the Evil Beast, Ferno watched the group from the skies, waiting to intervene and firing fire at Tom, being reflected off Tom's shield at Claw. Doing it a second time at Tom's request, Claw dropped to his knees, giving Tom the time to free the Golden Chainmail. With the artefact free, Ferno released more flame, incinerating Claw before flying away as the warrior grabbed the Golden Chainmail.

When Tom and Elenna were trying to find Ferno's phoenix sister, Spiros, Ferno was summoned to them to help. He circled the trees they were in, landing and spewing a small amount of fire in greeting. He extended a wing and invited them on to continue the search, being gratefully accepted. The group searched the skies, finding nothing as Spiros was hidden willingly. Not finding her, Tom ordered the Beast to descend, with Tagus taking over the search for the Ghost Phoenix.

Our first rocket has one goal, up

Ferno with the other Beasts thanking Tom for saving Spiros.

Ferno later joined with the five other Good Beasts on the shore of the Western Ocean to help summon Spiros, with the Fire Dragon thumping the ground with his tail. As Tom and Elenna left, Ferno took over caring for Storm and Silver, extending a wing over the two of them. After Spiros retook her body after Nawdren and Sethrina were defeated and Tom and Elenna returned, Ferno and the other Beasts thanked Tom and Elenna for their actions allowing the Beast to reclaim her body.

When Aduro approached Tom about participating in the Battle of the Beasts to protect the Book of Worlds, Tom was given the option to choose a Good Beast of Avantia to fight alongside him. He chose Ferno, the Fire Dragon roaring in approval and soaring up, approaching and landing on the rocks nearby, allowing Tom to climb onto his back. As the Beast flew towards Trillion and Seth, Vipero (an illegal contender) leapt up and struck Tom from the Fire Dragon's back. Ferno landed beside him, letting Tom climb back on. By the time they were ready to battle, Trillion, Vipero and Claw had fused to become the Super-Beast. The Beast struck out, barely missing Ferno. Upon Sethrina arriving, Tom guided the Beast over to the plinth holding the Book of Worlds, turning back to the Super-Beast as Elenna engaged Malvel's minion. He landed and began to run at the fusion Beast, who sank his teeth into Ferno's wing, causing the Good Beast to bellow in pain. When Sephir appeared after the Super-Beast was defeated, Ferno brought Tom and Elenna up to the top of the Storm Monster, allowing them to leap in. After the Evil Beast's defeat, Ferno began to approach Seth and Sethrina, terrifying the siblings. When they promised to never return to Avantia, the Good Beast scooped them up, dropped them on his back and flew away. Where he brought them is unknown.

The Dark Realm[]

While sections try to go chronologically, there is no way to slot Spiros, Sephir and series 3 together cleanly, so take the order of these sections with a grain of salt.

Like the other Good Beasts of Avantia, Ferno was driven into Gorgonia by Malvel to be disposed of by the Beasts of Gorgonia. Unlike the rest of his Beast brethren, Ferno apparently was able to remain uncaptured for several days, although the land's evil still drained him of his energy, causing resting on a hilltop. unaware of the mission given to his captor, Tusk to kill him. Before the Mighty Mammoth could deal with the Fire Dragon, Malvel called her away to follow the command of Seth, who had been tasked with finishing the Gorgonian rebel movement. As she returned, she rushed the Fire Dragon, who noticed her approach and tried to take to the air, but Tusk rammed him before he could, tipping him on his side and wrapping her trunk around the Good Beast's neck. She was drawn away by the cries of Marco, distracting her. Ferno was badly injured in the attack and left unable to breathe fire and barely able to move, but the Gorgonian guards bound him to be sure.

Spyro

Ferno freeing himself to enter the portal to Avantia.

When Tom drew near, the Beast used the Red Jewel to warn him of Tusk. When the Avantian entered the clearing, Ferno weakly raised his head to greet him, but he was forced away by the return of the Gorgonian Beast. As Tom began to do well in the battle with Tusk, Ferno roared in delight and began to try and break free, drawing Tusk's attention, but was intercepted by the Avantians, who after Elenna being poisoned by the Mighty Mammoth helped fight off Seth and the Gorgonian guards instead of helping Ferno. When Tusk was defeated, her defeat opened a portal to Avantia, causing Ferno to roar in hope, rise against the snake fern binding him, and return to Avantia with many of the Gorgonian rebels.

When Malvel dispatched Arax to corrupt Aduro and kill Tom in battle, he based himself in the mountain caves near where Ferno made his home. As such, when Tom duelled Nemico and the evil version of Tom matched the true warrior of Avantia admirably, Tom resorted to summoning Ferno to assist him. The Fire Dragon arrived with a jet of flame as he descended on the battleground, enraging the watching Malvel. The Beast released fire on Nemico, melting his leather shield as Arax's creation cowered behind it. He began to advance on Nemico, eventually forcing him off of the cliff, although he was caught by Tom, merging them and restoring Tom's whole soul. At this, Arax returned to battle, swooping at Tom. Ferno intercepted him, releasing a blast at fire that threw the Evil Beast into the cliff wall, with Arax lashing at the dragon with his whip, barely missing. At Tom's request, the Fire Dragon withdrew, positioning himself on a large rock nearby to watch the battle. After Arax was defeated Ferno approached Tom, gave him a gentle nudge to congratulate his achievements, and flew away.

Mortaxe the Skeleton Warrior[]

After Petra revived Mortaxe, the Skeleton Warrior summoned the Beasts of Avantia to him in the arena, with Ferno and Epos being the first two to arrive circling each other in the sky over the stadium just before it rose from the ground below them. When it rose fully, Ferno entered one of the contestant archways, appearing with the other Good Beasts of Avantia to battle for Mortaxe's amusement as the enchantment of the arena took hold.

Ferno attacked as the other Beasts moved into the Battleground. He pitted himself against Nanook, rearing his head back and releasing a stream fire on the Snow Monster, being met by the Beast's shielding arms, but badly singeing it. Nanook rushed Ferno, grabbing a wing and pulling him off-balance and throwing the Fire Dragon across the arena, but the Beast righted himself in the air and prepared to attack again, but his fight was stolen by Sepron attacking the Snow Monster. After Epos took Nanook out of the fight with a fireball to the back, Ferno rejoined the battle, joining Epos in attacking Arcta, raking his claws down his back and drawing huge quantities of blood from the Mountain Giant, with Arcta turning to attack, but being struck by Epos as he did so, being knocked out himself, leaving the free-for-all between Ferno and Epos as the two Beasts continued to attack the prone Mountain Giant. Epos broke away simultaneously with Ferno, climbing high before diving at each other. The Fire Dragon released flame, being deftly avoided by the Flame Bird, who struck the tip of Ferno's tail with a fireball. The two collided, exchanging blows as they dragged each other down, smashing into the ground. The two slowly untangled before reengaging, leaping at each other. Mortaxe called them off, pacing until the Skeleton Warrior allowed them to fight again, but Mortaxe chose to battle Tom, with both Beasts separating to give him room, reentering their arches and roaring in approval as the fight began.

Farosh

Ferno flying up to attack Petra.

When Mortaxe was defeated, the Beasts were released from the magic of the arena, with Ferno taking to the air. While the other Beasts began to destroy the arena, the Fire Dragon flew up to face Petra. He ignored Petra's cry that he was supposed to have turned to evil, reared his head back, and released a torrent of fire on her, causing Petra to teleport away to save herself from incineration. The Fire Dragon flew away soon after to resume his duties.

Ravira Ruler of the Underworld[]

As Ravira relied on the light of the moon for her power, Tom hoped to be able to block out the moonlight. To do this, he summoned Ferno to him. The Fire Dragon reached the Underworld city and positioned himself over Ravira's palace, using his bulk and wings to shield it from the moonlight. Ferno alone wasn't enough to block out all the light, and as such Epos was summoned soon after. When the city began to collapse after Ravira's defeat, the Fire Dragon and Flame Bird flew away, reuniting with the villagers (recovering from being Hounds of Avantia) and Tom and Elenna, flying in circles over the group. After the group had returned to Shrayton, Ferno roared in farewell and flew away.

Raksha the Mirror Demon[]

At the Lake of Light, Kapra used the power of the Mirror of Raksha to draw the six Good Beasts to her to summon Raksha. Ferno arrived fourth, and was forced to help summon the Mirror Demon by the magic of the ritual. As Raksha began to be summoned, the Fire Dragon was forced to contribute to the ritual (likely to give Raksha form). As the Evil Beast began to rise from the lake, Ferno began to spew flame over the water, meeting water being released by Sepron in a hissing impact. As the Mirror Demon pursued Tom and Elenna to Gorgonia, Kapra used her serpentine magic to cover Ferno and the other Good Beasts in binding snakes. As Tom began to push out the tokens from his stolen enlarged shield, the Fire Dragon was released from the magic keeping him apathetic and subdued, and he took to the air as the other Beasts moved into battle, roaring defiantly and building up fire in his jaws. He swept over the lake, evaporating much of it with the heat given out from his body. Raksha tried to grab at him, but the Good Beast was too quick for the Mirror Demon. He released another blast of flame on the water, draining the Evil Beast's power further as the lake shrank. After Raksha was thoroughly pummelled but not defeated, Tom sent the Beasts away so he could finish the Mirror Demon himself, with Ferno being the last of the Beasts of Avantia to leave, flying back to his own territory.

Grashkor the Beast Guard[]

Room for one more

Ferno, Sepron and Epos leaving.

As Tom and Sebastian engaged Grashkor in the Chamber of Pain, the Beasts of Avantia were summoned to battle by Elenna. Due to the location of the Chamber of Pain in the Western Ocean, only three Beasts could reach the battleground: Ferno, Sepron, and Epos. Ferno was the last of the three to arrive, swooping over the ocean as Epos released a fireball on Grashkor, temporarily taking him out of the fight, blinking an eye in greeting, and tipped a wing to the Avantians to allow them to climb on. When the Beast Guard hauled himself from the surf, the Fire Dragon swung around to face him, chasing him as the Evil Beast headed for Elenna's boat. Just before the Fire Dragon caught the Beast Guard, Tom pulled Ferno's flight path to one side, allowing him to graze a wing with his sword, sending Grashkor spiralling into the water, where Epos dropped the final standing tower of the prison on him. After the Beast was defeated, Ferno dropped the Avantians on the boat, roared in triumph, and flew away.

Master of the Beasts[]

Fracktail

When the Knights of Forton were revived and possessed by the spirits of the Evil Beasts they had once vanquished, the Doomskull-possessed Golden Knight began to hunt for Ferno in southern Avantia. The Fire Dragon became evasive, skilfully avoiding the Golden Knight. As such, Doomskull was the only Beast not to find and engage his quarry. After the other five Knights of Forton were freed from the Beasts possessing them, Malvel recalled Doomskull, giving up on killing the Good Beasts and prioritising returning to Avantia, using the King of Fear to kidnap King Hugo for use as blackmail leverage in negotiating his return. While Ferno was safe as the Beast began to target Errinel, Doomskull and Malvel used magic to make it appear the possessed Golden Knight was still hunting the Good Beast in an attempt to draw Tom away from the village, but Tom, choosing to put his own family over the good of the kingdom in a state of mourning after Tecton killed his father, chose not to come to Ferno's aid and engaged Doomskull anyway. When Tom engaged Malvel in Errinel, Elenna used Tom's shield (which Tom had lost in battle with the King of Fear) to once-again summon the Fire Dragon, not content to let Tom fight Malvel alone as he wanted. Ferno and Elenna arrived in Errinel as a desperate Malvel drew a concealed dagger from his robe and leapt at Tom. The Fire Dragon took aim and released a jet of flame at the dark wizard, incinerating Malvel and killing him instantly. Ferno then stayed to watch Tom be inducted as the new Master of the Beasts, replacing the deceased Taladon.

Ferrok the Iron Soldier[]

Dragonlord

Mordragon

Ferno attacking Ferrok on the ground.

As Tom battled Ferrok and his growing band of Iron Warriors, he summoned Ferno to assist in defeating the Iron Soldier. As the Beast advanced to transform Tom into one of his minions, Ferno arrived, roaring in challenge and descending on the battleground. Ferrok fired a fireball at the dragon, barely missing as the Fire Dragon rolled aside. The Good Beast flew straight into the Evil Beast, knocking Ferrok to the ground and scattering the Iron Warriors. The two Beasts scrapped on the ground, with Ferno using his fangs and claws to match Ferrok's attempts to bind him. The Beast pinned his foe to the ground, raking his claws across his chest and making significant gashes. Desperately, Ferrok reached for his belt, turning the flames around his body into hard iron spikes, driving Ferno off in pain. The Iron Soldier gathered up his warriors and leapt away, leaving Ferno to recover. When Aduro sent a vision to recall the Avantians, the Beast offered to carry them, but the wizard simply teleported them to him, with Tom saying a quick farewell to the Fire Dragon.

The New Age[]

Like the other Good Beasts, Ferno attended Taladon's funeral in spirit, channelling his grief and anguish through his token in Tom's shield as the former Master of the Beasts was taken into the Gallery of Tombs. During the funeral, Kensa arrived in Avantia and attacked the Beasts, including Ferno. In battle, the witch was able to draw blood, stealing it and moving on. Ferno's blood would be used to create Flaymar, the personal favourite of Kensa amongst the Beasts she made.

The Cursed Dragon[]

Inhuman Rampage

Ferno approaching the twisters.

After Tom had freed Raffkor, he then had to get to the City of Snakes to get the next ingredient and free Vislak. Due to the trip from Avantia's north to its south being a six day journey, riding would have taken them past the full moon, allowing Kensa to curse Vedra. As such, Tom summoned Ferno, who had sensed he was needed. Ferno flew to the Northern Mountains, landing before the group and allowing them to climb onto his back. Ferno flew south, quickly reaching the Ruby Desert. As Ferno approached the City of Snakes, two sand twisters rose from the ground (possibly created by Kensa's magic). Tom helped the Fire Dragon fly around the twisters, but one of the storms pulled Ferno's wing upwards, throwing the Avantians from his back as he lost altitude, the group crashing into the sand dunes, being cushioned by the sand. Ferno wished to continue helping Tom, however Tom told him to remain safe, worried Ferno could be cursed by Kensa if he stayed. Ferno moved away a short distance with a shake of his head, watching Tom and Elenna walk toward the City of Snakes.

After Vislak was freed, Ferno returned to Tom in order to transport him and Elenna to the Dark Jungle, where Tikron was guarding the Red Root. Tom tried to request Ralph to join, but he refused. Ferno flew east to the Dark Jungle, arriving as night fell. As they landed, Tom again told the Fire Dragon to leave to avoid being corrupted by Kensa. The Beast hesitated, but accepted, flying away.

Falkor the Coiled Terror[]

Maximum Overload

After Falkor was awoken by Berric, the Coiled Terror engaged the Avantians in battle. With the aid of Berric, the Beast dominated the battle, forcing Tom to summon Ferno for aid in battle. The Beast arrived, roaring in challenge to the Coiled Terror before descending on him, sinking his claws into Falkor's side, with the Beast writhing in pain and releasing Tom from his tail. Ferno carried him up into the air, the two Beasts battling in mid-air. Falkor slithered up to Ferno's neck and sank his fangs in, envenoming the Good Beast. The two crashed to the ground, with the venom starting to bend Ferno to Berric's will. The Beast rose up, flung his wings wide, began to build up fire, and released the jet of flame at Tom, who rolled aside before using his shield to negate the fire. When Petra knocked Berric out, Ferno was released from his control. The Beast explained he was unaware what had come over him, with Tom quickly explaining what the venom had done to him before the group left to pursue Falkor and Berric.

The Kingdom of Dragons[]

Reaching into Infinity

Ferno arriving in Errinel.

When Tom, Elenna and Petra had to pursue Jezrin and Berric to Drakonia, they needed a dragon to take them to the Kingdom of Dragons. Tom called Ferno, swooping into Errinel's square, startling many villagers before Tom explained he was a Good Beast. He asked the Beast to take to Drakonia, which Ferno was cautious about due to the danger, but accepted the request. The group climbed on and Ferno took to the air, heading east to Drakonia. After crossing over the Forbidden Land, the Fire Dragon opened the portal to Drakonia, appearing over the Lava Sea. Ferno told them they had to turn back, but Tom had him push on, with the Beast grudgingly agreeing.

After dealing with the lava spurts of the sea, Quarg and Berric appeared before them. He dived at them, with Tom repelling them before Ferno moved away. Quarg was able to pull Elenna off the Fire Dragon, being followed by the group. Ferno moved below the Stone Dragon, giving Tom the chance to slash the Beast's leg, releasing Elenna, with Tom jumping off to catch her. The Fire Dragon glided below them, catching them again before both groups landed to battle before Quarg took off to collect Jezrin. Ferno watched Tom duel Berric before the Stone Dragon returned with his master. He pulled a dart from his cloak and aimed it at Tom, changing his aim at the last second to strike Ferno, sinking into his head and seemingly killing him. After Quarg was freed from Jezrin's control, he used his fire to melt the dart, reviving Ferno, who awoke and the two dragons exchanged a nod before Quarg left and Ferno took the group deeper into Drakonia.

Soldiers of the Wasteland

Fury of the Storm

Ferno crashing.

Flying over the icy wastes near the Frozen Ocean, the combination of the cold and exhaustion from nearly dying (as well as potential lingering effects of the dart), caused the Beast to begin to lose altitude and crash. Tom told Ferno to return home, which the Beast tried to refuse as Drakonia was too dangerous, but Tom insisted, with Ferno flying away and creating a portal back to Avantia.

Scoria

Ferno arriving in Drakonia with many other good dragons.

After Jezrin's death, Petra summoned good dragons from across the kingdoms together to take them back. Ferno was one of the Beasts to answer the call, appearing as one of the many Good Beasts to arrive alongside Vedra, Krimon, Quarg, Vetrix, and a swarm of unknown dragons from other kingdoms.

Kyrax the Metal Warrior[]

Operation Ground and Pound

Elgiloy

Talonite

Ferno defeated as Kyrax leaps over him into the City.

After Tagus was forced to withdraw from battle with Kyrax, Tom summoned Ferno to battle due to the Beast's fear of molten metal and fire. The Fire Dragon drew close to Tom, who leapt from his Henkrallian steed onto the back of the Good Beast. He approached the Metal Warrior and released a jet of fire on the Henkrallian Beast, who tried to fly away, but fell to the ground as his wings melted. Ferno turned and spun around for another attack, but as he drew close, Kyrax stabbed up, catching the Beast and drawing blood. The dragon buckled and slammed into the ground. The Beast was forced to sit out the next few minutes as he recovered, but soon lunged at Kyrax, ploughing his snout into Tom's side, throwing him clear of the Metal Warrior's attack and taking over the clash, telling Tom to make the sword of Kyrax's metal (only weapons of a Beast could hurt Kyrax). Kyrax turned to try and attack Tom, but was intercepted by a jet of flame, with the Fire Dragon forcing him to battle him. As Tom forged the sword the two Beasts battled outside the City walls, with Kyrax managing to come up on top, throwing Ferno at the walls, smashing a hole for him to enter before leaving the dragon to bleed on the cobbles. When Kyrax was defeated, the Good Beast insisted he could wait while Tom treated Elenna. Presumably, Tom healed Ferno's wounds before the Beast flew away.

The Sorcerer's Revenge[]

Poser Killer

Ferno attacking Tarantix, making her shell brittle.

When Malvel struck Tom's shield with a sleep spell, the magic travelled through the tokens to all of the Beasts, and as such Ferno fell dormant with the others. He was later awoken by Lyra using the potion she and Daltec had developed to reverse the spell as Daltec awoke Sepron. While still woozy and disorientated from the magically induced sleep, he sensed the battle raging in the Ruby Desert as the Netherworld Beast Tarantix fought to devour the newly born Prince Thomas and flew out to offer his support to the Avantians. He wobbly flew over the Bone Spider and released a jet of flame on her, forcing her to release Tom before rolling across the sand to attempt to extinguish the fire. He then flew to the ground and landed in a heap as the poisonous spell still held some effect. The fire made Tarantix's exoskeleton brittle enough for Tom to pierce with his sword, letting him defeat the Beast. He tried to offer thanks to Ferno, but received no reply due to the effect of the spell. Ferno then stayed in the Ruby Desert for some time to recover his strength as Tom went on to fight Lypida and Malvel.

Reasons to Live

Ferno falling after being knocked out.

When Tom, Elenna, Aroha and Yara had to travel to Tangala to collect the Jewels of Tangala to launch a mission to rescue Prince Rotu from Zargon, Tom summoned Ferno to carry them quickly. Ferno was forced to fly high, as the kingdom were very aggressive to Beasts due to their experience with the Evil Beasts native to Tangalan land and would attack Ferno out of fear and anger. As they flew in the freezing clouds, the Beast used his fire to try and warm them up. Aroha predicted they had passed the northern territories (the most populated areas) and as such elected the group descended. Aroha had been wrong, and the group descended directly over the capital city of Pania. They were seen and the Tangalan military scrambled archers, ballistas and catapults to deal with what they perceived to be an aggressive Beast attacking the city. A ballista fired its bolt at Ferno, almost striking his head before a hail of arrows bounced off his scales. The dragon wished to counterattack, but Tom and Aroha ensured him they were simply frightened. The Tangalans loaded a flaming boulder, which amused Ferno, who promised he would show them fire, before the boulder slammed into his head and knocked him out. The Beast began to plummet, but the passengers managed to leap off safely before the Fire Dragon struck the ground. When he awoke, he furiously growled at the Tangalans before Tom asked him to return home as Aroha explained the situation. He shot them a final glare before taking to the air and flying away.

The Ghost of Karadin[]

Following the return of Karadin, a disgraced Master of the Beasts from centuries ago, Ferno, like all the other Avantian Good Beasts, grew disoriented at the presence of two Masters of the Beasts, though whether this effected his responsibilities is unknown. Ferno's voice flitted in and out of Tom's mind through the Red Jewel and his scale as angry and confused whispers, mixing and merging with the voices of the other Beasts.

Maximus chose Ferno to be the first Beast to serve him in the Battle of the Beasts, and used dark magic to tame him and bend him to his will. They engaged Sam and Epos above a large lake. He swept at them. He attacked the Flame Bird after Maximus ordered him to when Sam refused to stand down, the two Beasts slamming together. Ferno snapped his jaws at Epos, being countered by her beak, starting to tear each other apart while Sam and Maximus engaged. The Fire Dragon shot fire at his foes as Epos pulled away and dived, forcing Sam to duck down. The Beast pulled off her dive and moved away, being followed by Ferno. Epos moved over Ferno, dropping down and grabbing the dragon's horns with her talons, pulling his head around until Ferno reared up and slashed with his claws. Epos rammed the dragon, with Sam drawing close and attacking Maximus. The young wizard ordered his Beast to move away, but Ferno didn't hear him due to the battle. Before he could dislodge Maximus, the Fire Dragon lashed out his tail, forcing the Flame Bird back and knocking Sam off, forcing Epos to recover him. The Beast fired a fireball at Ferno, barely missing Maximus but singeing his hair. The wizard ordered his Beast to burn them, with Epos dodging right, catching a few feathers and causing Epos pain. He blasted again, missing and starting a forest fire, although as the forest was damp, it hardly spread. The Flame Bird moved away, being tailed by Ferno, who continued to blast them with fire. After Sam lost his sword, Ferno was guided down to strike, heading for the lake as Epos tried to lure him into the water, but pulled off when Lara found the sword in the water and recovered it, passing it to Sam as Ferno adjusted and approached. The two Beasts slammed together again, Ferno sinking his fangs in Epos's shoulder, disengaging as Maximus was almost knocked off, rolling away but accidentally making the wizard fall, barely able to hang onto the saddle. The Flame Bird drew close to the dragon, allowing Sam to flick the saddle off, sending Maximus spiralling to the ground and releasing Ferno from the dark magic. He wheeled around and landed, dipping his head in thanks and respect. He and Epos escorted Sam back to the City, the knights-in-training gathering in awe before both Beasts leapt into the air and flew away, with the Fire Dragon returning home.

Powers, Abilities and Weaknesses[]

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Fire Breath: Ferno can breathe fire from his mouth. This ability is one of his most used and is his main form of attack. His burning breath is described to be as hot as molten lava and is powerful enough to incinerate Claw and kill Malvel. It was also hot enough to completely incinerate all of Caldor the Brave but his gauntlet, a grown man clad entirely in bronze armour. Ferno's fire was also strong enough to melt Nemico's leather shield and fling Arax against a rough mountainside.
  • Flight: Ferno has two wings which allow him to fly at great speeds and can be used in combat by smacking his opponents.
  • Enhanced Strength: Ferno has incredible strength, able to shatter an entire dam of boulders with a single strike with his tail and fling around Beasts like Arax with his tail.
  • Enhanced Speed: Ferno swished his tail so fast that Silver couldn't react to it, flinging the wolf onto the rocky ground. He was also fast enough to arrive at Arax's mountain in a matter of minutes and dodge Arax's fast whip.
  • Enhanced Durability: Ferno has incredible durability, as he can survive being thrown through walls, slammed into the ground by Nanook, falling from great heights and being stabbed by Kyrax (although he did have to recover for a few minutes afterwards).
  • Natural Weaponry: Ferno has sharp claws which he uses as one of his main forms of attack, second only to his flaming breath. These claws are sharp enough to draw blood from Arcta and make significant gashes in Ferrok's chest. Ferno also has sharp teeth, described as being able to crush boulders in seconds.
  • Limited Camouflage: Ferno can camouflage himself to look like a rock by folding his wings over his body. Caldor mistaken Ferno to be a big mountain.
  • Poison Immunity: Ferno appears to be immune to poison, as seen when he wasn't harmed by Tusk's poisonous tusks.

Weaknesses[]

  • Enchantments: Due to being a Good Beast, Ferno is susceptible to enchantments.
  • Durability Limits: Ferno's durability has limits, as seen when he got knocked out by a flaming boulder.

Descriptions[]

The complete Book of beasts[]

Horrick's official description[]

" In caves in the south, by Avantia's Winding River, lurks Ferno the Fire Dragon. From his giant mouth, Ferno breathes fire that is as hot as volcanic lava. His huge teeth can crush boulders in seconds. The thick dragon scales that cover his body cannot be pierced by any blade. Ferno is so enormous, he is often mistaken for one of the mountains 1. The Fire Dragon patrols the river and makes sure the southern towns of the kingdom are never flooded. Should the waters rise 2, he can use his clawed feet to build protective dams. Their sudden appearances confuse the locals - but they are grateful for them!"

Protagonist annotations[]

1: Tom : "I know - I made this mistake!"

2: Tom : "But when he was under an evil enchantment, he blocked the whole river and caused a drought!"

Protagonist additions[]

Tom :" My very first Quest was battling Ferno. I had been sent to the city by my Uncle Henry, to ask the King to send help to my village. The next thing I knew, I was sent to go and look for a dragon! I wanted adventure, and I got more than I could have ever wished for. Unlike later on in my Beast Quests, I had no magical powers or weapons to rely on when battling Ferno. I only had a key that would unlock the evil collar Malvel had put around Ferno's neck. It was just me versus the Beast..."

Elenna: "Don't forget me - I was there too! I remember wondering whether joining you on this Beast Quest was a good idea. I definitely made the right choice!"
