Archer

Elenna is a main character and Tom's companion in the Beast Quest series. She first met Tom in the Forest of Fear in Avantia and joined his quest and every subsequent one. In Series 10, she was officially named Companion to the Master of the Beasts and it's implied that if Tom retired from the position of Master of the Beasts or was killed, she would become Mistress of the Beasts.

Her main weapon is her bow and arrows - though she has used other weapons. She has knowledge of herbs given to her by her various relatives and can be a skilled manipulator when she wants to. Unlike Tom, she doesn't use any magical artefacts.

Personality[]

Elenna is much like Tom in her determination and good nature. She is slightly rougher due to her harsh upbringing, and is fiercely protective of her wolf, Silver. She finds it hard to trust people who Silver doesn't, and was in great distress when he briefly turned into an evil beast. Elenna wants to do what is right, and is great friends with Tom, appearing in all of his adventures. She also appears to be somewhat the brains behind Tom's beast quest, as her intelligence and idea creativity seems to be a bit better then Tom's. Without Elenna, Tom's beast quest would have ended at the very first book.

In Series 19, when passing through a cave that magically compels its occupants to become angry, she complains about never getting any of the tokens earned on the Quests. However, it's unknown where these feelings were artificially created by the cave or whether these are genuine feelings that she represses.

Appearance[]

Elenna is skinny, with black hair. She is young, and looks small and almost gaunt. Her hair is short and straight, and easy to wear in combat. She often carries a bow and arrows as her weapon, being a brilliant marksman.

Kin[]

Elenna's parents were killed in a fire at a very young age when she was young, and was raised by her uncle Leo, who is a fisherman that appears in a few of the Beast Quest books, making his debut in Balisk the Water Snake.

Series 1: Where it all began[]

In the first book, Ferno the Fire Dragon, Tom travels through the forest and is attacked by some of King Hugo's soldiers, who mistake him as a hunter. Silver appears and helps Tom fight back against the soldiers. Elenna then makes her first debut, searching for her wolf. Tom and her end up having an agreement and they become companions for their first time. In Book 3 Series 1, Arcta the Mountain Giant, Elenna is trapped in a cave with little air. Tom manages to defeat Arcta and ask for his help to free her.

Series 2: The Golden Armour[]

After defeating 6 beasts, the companions grow more accustomed to each other. Not much difference happens in this series after they are good companions, except for Elenna apparently saving Tom around 10 times. In Book 2 Series 2, Claw the Giant Monkey, Elenna is captured by Claw and is kept in a crater. Tom and Silver eventually help her escape.

Series 3: The Dark Realm[]

Again, not much happens for Elenna except her accompanying of Tom and her passage through the Lion's Gate. In Book 5 Series 3, Tusk the Mighty Mammoth, Elenna is grabbed by a snake fern: plants that can grab you and never let go (the plant has power enough to contain Ferno). Elenna is also poisoned by the Mighty Mammoth's tusk. She is healed by the medicine women.

Series 4: The Amulet of Avantia[]

In this series, Elenna again mainly accompanies Tom throughout the books. In fact, in this series she doesn't even get captured.

Series 5: The Shade of Death[]

Elenna plays her role as joint protagonist, helping Tom defeat the beats in Gwildor.

Series 6: The World of Chaos[]

After travelling through Velmal's portal Elenna breaks her arm, and Tom fixes it for her. She helps Tom defeat the beasts so they can get the ingredients for the potion to save Tom's mother, Freya.

Series 7: The Lost World[]

She travels with Tom as they arrive in Tavania and see what is happening there. She helps Tom return each beast to their natural habitats.

Series 8: The Pirate king[]

Returning to Avantia, Elenna has to deal with the loss of her wolf, Silver, and accompanies Tom throughout the quest. This is a difference as in all the other BQ books, this seems to be the first series in which it becomes personal for Elenna as Sanpao almost killed her uncle and she needed the Tree of Being to bring back Silver. This is also the series where she gets her own horse, Blizzard.

Series 9: The Warlock's Staff[]

Elenna travels with Tom to Seraph to retrieve the Warlock's Staff and save Aduro. She helps to defeat all the six Beasts which Malvel and Petra created (Except Torpix) to block their quest.

Series 10: Master of the Beasts[]

Elenna helps Tom to defeat the evil Knights of Forton and the Beasts. She becomes impressed with the Black Knight's flair and makes one herself which the Red Knight destroys. She comforts Tom after his father's death and saves Tom from Malvel before he dies by calling Ferno.

Trivia[]

  • Elenna's parents have never appeared in the series, outside of Koba taking the form of her mother.
  • Her first point-of-view chapter was in Verak the Storm King.
  • While they are best friends, it's unlikely she has any strong romantic feelings for Tom, as nothing of the sort is mentioned in her POV chapters and she didn't understand what was happening when Tom flirted with her under the influence of a love potion during the quest against Scalamanx the Fiery Fury.
  • It's implied (if not outright confirmed) across the series that she is more intelligent than Tom, easily beating him at the strategic board game Peril and being able to manipulate Sanpao into telling them about Kensa and Jeng's plans where Tom was unable to get an answer. Whether or not she is a superior combatant is up for debate, as the Golden Armour boosts his physical abilities to far beyond a normal human's, and while she does manage to get the better of Tom in several instances when they are forced to fight, he is usually under the influence of magic and either distracted or fighting with himself.
  • She has occasionally faced misogamy from strangers in several quests.
  • She usually prefers masculine clothing, and reacted indignantly to the dress she had to wear for King Hugo's birthday celebrations just before the revival of Mortaxe the Skeleton Warrior. However, she was fine with wearing a dress during King Hugo and Queen Aroha's wedding. It's possible that she simply prefer the latter's style.
  • When she first met Tom, she stated that her uncle wouldn't miss her if she disappeared for a few days. While it initially sounded like he didn't care about her, their good relationship later on either implied they worked out their issues, or she meant that he trusted her to look after herself when she went on trips.
  • She has occasionally expressed an interest in learning how to wield a sword. During the battle against Vespick the Wasp Queen, she used a sword and mentioned that she might keep it if Tom showed her some moves. After Malvel's escape from the Isles of Ghosts, she and Tom were practicing with wooden swords in the courtyard of the castle.
  • She is usually depicted with a fear of fire, due to the nature of her parents' death. But this is usually limited to dangerous fire, such as Hellion's, as she has no visible problem using campfires. On the Isles of Ghosts, she seems to come to terms with her fear for good.
